Meryl Lefkovich

About the Artist

My life has been an immersion in art, from the high school art class that made me see color and form in the world to a B.A. in Art History, to working in a variety of creative fields. I’ve worked as an art consultant, travel agent, gallery manager and in interior and jewelry design.

My self-taught painting journey began with small botanical watercolors. Then, inspired by European travels, I started doing photorealistic architectural watercolors, mainly of the Boston area. I participated in many shows in Boston and have my work in a number of corporate and private collections in the area.

The pandemic changed everything, as it did for so many. I feel fortunate that it allowed me the space to create with less pressure and more mental and emotional freedom, to be set free from the controlled and detailed oriented work at which I was successful, but not enjoying.

I am influenced by everything around me, consequently my subject matter tends to be transient while seeking to connect all my work with color, energy and texture. Accepting that total abstraction was not my thing, I began incorporating realism and abstract together, which keeps things fresh and exciting for me, the common denominator always centering on color.

Within the past year, I have switched from acrylic to oils and oil sticks. I find this medium allows me to be more expressive and experimental.

While the focus of my work changes, consistent themes are nature, animals and women and their commonality as the symbols of life, power, strength, love and the spiritual.

I’ve lived primarily in the Boston area, as well as Western Massachusetts. I moved to Asheville in 2015 and into Wedge Studios in the River Arts District in 2019. Unless I can move to Europe, I’ll probably remain here.
